TERESA CATALÁN, born in Pamplona in 1951, learns Piano and Composition in Pablo Sarasate Conservatory. Among her professors there were Fernando Remacha, Luis Morondo, Luis Taberna, Juan Eraso and Pilar Bayona.

During her formative years Teresa undertook a number of improvement courses, notably those imparted by two major figures of Spanish music who she considers her teachers: Agustín González Acilu (Contemporary Composition Techniques) and Ramón Barce (Sociology of Music). She also attended composition courses lectured by Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena (Italy), as well as numerous others taught by great European and American composers.

Teresa holds an M.A. in Musical Aesthetics and Creativity, and a PhD in Philosophy of Arts, both from the University of Valencia.

She has earned interpretation and composition awards, as well as other acknowledgements of her career, among which the National Music Award in the specialty of composition in 2017.

In 2011, she was honored with the Encomienda de la Orden al Mérito Civil.

She is member of JAKIUNDE, Academy of Sciences, Arts and Language in Basque Country, Navarra and Aquitaine.

She has been member of the State Council for the Performing Arts and Music, and of the Arts Council of Music.

Currently, she is part of the Culture Council of the Navarre Government.

Teresa is founding member of the Pamplona Composers Group (Iruñeako taldea Musikagileak).

She has directed the music sections of the following festivals, courses and activities:

  • Director of the International Composition Diploma at Veruela Música Viva (Monastery of Veruela. Saragossa), during 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002.
  • Director of Veruela International Festival Veruela Música Viva, at the Monastery of Veruela (Saragossa), during 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000.
  • Commissioner of the IX Meeting of Creation Sensxperiment, tribute to Ramón Barce. Codoba - Lucena, October 2007.

Teresa has published the book Sistemas compositivos temperados en el siglo XX (segunda edición), and co-published Música no tonal: Las propuestas de J. Falk y E. Krenek. She has compiled a number of articles, presentations and musical works in various others volumes. She also publishes in various journals.

She is an active member of the Editorial Board of the "Papeles" Journal of the Festival of Cadiz (a scientific journal which has received the recognition of the Spanish National Research Council). He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the "Pasajeros" Magazine, edited by the Complutense University.

She teaches several courses and lectures regularly at Festivals, Institutions, Universities and Conservatories in Spain and abroad: Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Morocco, Italy, Argentina, etc.

Teresa was the Director of the Tarazona’s Conservatory (Saragossa) and Vice-Director of the Saragossa’s Conservatory. She also was Guest Professor and Associated Professor in the Balearic Islands’ Conservatory.

She has been Director of different doctoral works and, since 2018, she es Professor Emeritus of Composition and Instrumentation of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid.
